Dear All,
I recently inspected SAFIRA again at the Palm Beach boat show. First let me start by saying she is in EXCELLENT CONDITION and has had a number of very nice interior and exterior upgrades made by this owner.

Let's start by talking a bit about the information at the top of the page. On most reports this is normally just the common info and tells us the basics about the boat. However, with SAFIRA it reveals quite a bit more. Some of what it shows is why this vessel was so expensive to build. The build cost was over 30% more than the present asking price. The main engines are C32 Cats and they were a great choice for many reasons, but while not ultra expensive they are not cheap. The drive system they are attached to and the way they are mounted are where a great deal of money went. Schottel Azipod drives are many times more expensive than a standard shaft system. This is a very high end commercial system which offers a number of benefits. It is very durable, extremely efficient when mounted as it is in SAFIRA, it is very quiet and it is highly maneuverable. The Schottel drive system integrates into the automated positioning system (DPS) so the boat can remain in place for extended periods of time without anchoring. This system integrates the drive system, the thruster, autopilot and GPS to control the boat.

As you would expect with a vessel of this size, it is built to Class and MCA. What stands out in this line is the ABS D0 Ice Class. There is quite a bit that has to be added to a vessel to meet this class and to keep it in class. The requirements for strength, design and systems are extensive. This is again where the Schottel drive system comes into play, as it is a protected and approved system. There are upgrades in heating, seawater and other areas also. The other point of interest is the Gross Tonnage of the vessel. Gross Tonnage is a measurement of the volume of the boat, while displacement is the weight. The gross tonnage of SAFIRA is 425 which is well above average for a vessel of this length. How does this affect cost? The cost to build the interior of a yacht is one of the high expense areas, more volume = more interior furniture and fitting out = more cost.
