Coast Guard Responds to Capsized Rowboat American Fire

Stavros Niarchos PORTSMOUTH, Va. - The Coast Guard is responding to an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) signal it recieved today, from a capsized rowboat located 1,300 miles east of Puerto Rico.

The rowboat, American Fire, was taking part in the 2005 Atlantic Rowing Race, a trans-Atlantic rowboat race from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Carribean.

A Coast Guard C-130 Search and Rescue plane from Air Station Clearwater, Fl., and the sailing vessel Starvos S. Niarchos are enroute to the rowboats location.

The American Fire is the second rowboat in the race that the Coast Guard has assisted.
