Dear All,
During the 2024 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show I was able to inspect the Empire Sea, a custom long range steel sport fish Explorer Yacht.

Empire Sea has spent most of her time on the US Pacific coast and has traveled extensively along it. The question over the years about her has been her stability as she has a steel superstructure but over the years, she has proven herself to be a solid seaworthy vessel. She just did the trip around to Fort Lauderdale and speaking with the crew including the captain and engineer they were all very pleased with her performance in high seas. They reported 20 plus feet during the passage.

Empire Sea is powered by highly reliable Caterpillar 3412 and had a full service in June of 2014. I cannot say enough good things about these engines. I believe they are better then the new equivalent modern electronic series.

Empire Sea Overview

At 10 knots she has a 3241 nm range, at high cruise,12 knots, she has 2740 NM mile range. I was not able to get a 9 knot cruise or a one engine cruise range but I was told by the engineer that they are going to be testing new propellers that he feels with increase range and efficiency. I will report back to you with the results.

Empire Sea Main Salon and Dining

Empire Sea's present owner did a interior and mechanical refit on her. I usually find interior refits to just be a fluff and buff sort of thing but in this case they made some excellent changes in the layout. The original main deck layout had several no structural bulkheads that really broke up the interior. These were removed and now the vessel has a much more open feel to her.

She has a wonderful large galley with a large settee. There is a full line of windows across the front and side windows so this area is also bright and open.

The upper sky lounge was converted into a master stateroom and as expected has excellent views from all areas of it. This gives you two masters and two guests. The one downside to the staterooms is that the two double guest berths are not walk around.

Below is a list of refit items:

REFIT 2018/2021/22/24:

• Rudders dropped, rudder shafts addressed, new bearings, new seals
• Main engine Port and Starboard shafts removed; straightened/ new bearings/seals installed
• Sandblast entire underwater area back to bare steel
• Bilge and hull areas steel audio gauged in depth- Thickness measurement report shows hull in great condition
• Repair- two locations of hull steel repaired per the 2024 Audio Gauge report
• Bottom completely refurbished 3 x coats of steel primer and underwater antifouling
• Renewed all hull zincs
• Comprehensive exterior paint refinishing
• Additional corrosion removal work topside
• Teak decks replaced and serviced; margin boards refitted
• Corrosion in bilges addressed
• New Alfa Laval Centrifuge MB-103
• Anchor bow pulpit added on bow to hold 2 anchors (2023)
• 2nd anchor windlass installed with chain (2023)
• New Jacuzzi
• Exterior varnish stripped and renewed
• Teak replaced on various decks
• Replacement of 10 Fan Coil Units of the A/C System
• New Anchor Chains – 5 shackles per side (450’ each)
• Master cabin added to bridge deck level behind wheelhouse

Empire Sea Bridge

I know a lot of you are thinking, I am not into fishing so this boat will not work for me. I feel strongly that she will be a great cruising vessel for any purpose but if you are into diving and toys, I think she could be a great choice.

There is a large crane and tender, lots of room for more toys. She has the cold and dry storage to remain in remote areas for long periods of time and the space to be highly flexible to meet a lot of different needs.

Does Empire Sea have some draw backs, yes, will she be more to operate then a more modern vessel, yes. But at 253 Gross Tonnes, and a asking price of $2,900,000 you are looking at a cost of only $1146 per gross ton, that is very reasonable. Plus you get a large amount of deck space.

Empire sea is well worth considering depending on what your requirements are in a long-range yacht.
