During the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show I inspected HARBOUR ISLAND, the new 180’/54.9m from Newcastle Shipyard based in Palm Coast, Florida. I also inspected their shipyard two weeks ago. It was refreshing to see a first class large yacht coming out of an American yard.
HARBOUR ISLAND was very well done both technically and cosmetically. She is a very big volume yacht with many clever design features. HARBOUR ISLAND should make a popular charter yacht. I particularly liked the twin master staterooms; the infinity pool and big beach/garage.
Main Salon
Although the yacht took almost 6 years to build you need to take into account that some major changes were incorporated mid build (raising the head room on the main deck; extending 16’ among many others). With HARBOUR ISLAND, Newcastle has proven again that they are capable of producing a high quality yacht.

During my visit to the Newcastle Shipyard I saw 3 yachts under construction: a 125’ Expedition Yacht; a 149’ Expedition yacht with some pretty interesting features (Master behind the bridge; wood burning fire place and heli deck) and they were just starting a 177’ Expedition Yacht.
Although Newcastle has had some growing pains they have recently completed a yard expansion that approximately triples their capacity. The new sheds are world class, as are the new offices.
