Inspection of Dauntless 75 and Shipyard

Dear All,
I have just returned from a trip to Istanbul, Turkey to inspect the D75, the first of the Dauntless Explorer Yachts under construction. Jon Overing, the designer of the Dauntless line and many other Explorer and long range yachts met me there. The D75 and the D85 are built in fiberglass to class standards. I will start by saying that the D75 is being built with the scrimp system of glass construction to a VERY high standard!

Flying into Istanbul was easy and the airport is first class. We stayed at that the Atokoy Marina Hotel, there is Sheraton hotel close by also. The marina is about 15 minutes from the airport in a secure and upscale area. It is a large marina with a number of very good restaurants and a huge mall near by. The area is centrally located as it is about 25 minutes west to the yard and about 25 minutes east to central Istanbul.

Shipyard

The shipyard is off the water on a hill and is all new having been built in the last 6 years. There are good office facilities, two large building bays, wood working, paint bays and production shops. The whole yard is neat, clean and well kept.

When you enter the building hall the D75 hull dominates the area, this is when you get your first real impression of just how huge this 75' boat is. At this time, the hull is complete in the mold, engines are in and the house, deck and flybridge are finished and being readied to be put in place. Photos shows Jon Overing standing at bow, the keel is 4' off the floor, from keel to deck is 15'6", to the top of the bow bulwarks will be 18', from the water line it is 11'.

The hull is solid glass infused using the scrimp system and the glass work is just lovely to see. The deck and house is scrimped foam core except where load bearing equipment like windless, crane and cleats are in place. These areas are solid glass and have stainless steel backing plates glassed in. Everything I saw being done was well thought out and built to class standards or above. All of the stainless steel work is wonderful, from the foil shaped rudders with over sized shafts, stainless engine beds, over sized propeller shafts, stainless tank tops and hydraulic ram supports, all the welding and shaping is excellent.

Standing in the hull is were you get the second impression of how large this Explorer Yacht is. The Dauntless line is described as a "Raised pilothouse" design but it could be more accurately described as a hidden tri-deck.

Her lower forward hull compartment is massive having the room of many skylounge, it is discreetly located under the forward lower guest cabins and is accessed by comfortable stairs. This compartment holds the full laundry, additional refrigerator and freezers, pantry, dry storage, the forward pump room and access to the bulb.

Head of yard standing in lower compartment

The photo above shows the head of the shipyard standing in the lower forward bilge, the deck of the lower VIP is at the top of the frame, the whole area will have 6'6" or more head room with floors installed. Forward of this is the bulb with watertight hatch. One of the features that you usually only find in much larger boats and is above class requirements are the two watertight stabilizer compartments located at the aft end of the lower compartment and are designed to be easily accessible. Another big boat feature is the pipe tunnel that runs from the engine room forward.

During the visit we had meetings with all of the systems people, electric, piping and so on. All are very experienced and knowledgeable in their fields and very easy to work with. The electrical systems for all of the Dauntless Explorers are designed by "Atlas Electrical", piping is done by Jon Overing. All the materials are top quality including NiCu raw water piping and stainless bilge systems.

Pilothouse

The spaces in the pilothouse, main deck house and aft deck are all very generous and you can see in the photos that the head room is excellent throughout the boat.

In conclusion I am very confident that the yard will continue with the high quality of build standard I observed during this first visit and that the Dauntless D75 and the rest of the line will set a new standard in this size and class of vessel.

If you have been looking for a true world cruising Explorer Yacht that can be handled with no or a small crew, has the features and space of a much larger boat and has outstanding equipment and quality the D75 and the rest of the Dauntless line is the Explorer you have been looking for.

The Dauntless D75 will be completed in 12 months.

Please Contact Me with any questions you have or to arrange an inspection of the boat and yard.

Warmest regards,
John DeCaro
